Webchats to Help Prepare for AmeriCorps Week 2009

Participation is free, but you must register separately for each conversation and download the WebEx application (for free) in order to participate.

Each with its own theme, five “web chats” — conference calls that also involve following an online presentation —  will take place at the following dates and times.

AmeriCorps Week 2009: May 9 to 16

picture-1If you are involved with AmeriCorps service — as a program director, current member, or alum — this is a great year to step out into your community to spotlight national service during AmeriCorps Week.

With so much national attention focused on AmeriCorps in the past year, people of all ages have heard of AmeriCorps programs and are eager to get involved.  Hearing about your experiences, and getting to ask questions of you, may be the tipping point for jumping in and applying.

To help them map a path to national service, you can play a pivotal role in educating your community about the value of service.

AmeriCorps Week, coming up in mid-May, is a great time to make a presentation at a local school, chat with your faith community’s social groups, staff a table on-campus, host an event, or bring up the notion of AmeriCorps with peers during your regular volunteer projects. Remember, people of all ages participate in national service!

Atlas Corps Deadline Extended for Candidates from the U.S., East Asia and Brazil

Atlas Corps — the international service and exchange corps for nonprofit professionals — has extended its deadline for candidates from the United States, East Asia, and Brazil.

Over 500 candidates have applied for the Atlas Corps Fellowship.In all cases the earlier the application is received the better, so if you want to apply, please do so as soon as possible. They are beginning to review applications now.

Atlas Corps seeks nonprofit leaders from the United States

All candidates must have a college degree, 2+ years of nonprofit experiences and Spanish proficiency. The particular skills we hope to find include candidates with capacity building, business consulting, fundraising and social entrepreneurship. Atlas Corps seeks nonprofit leaders from East Asia

All candidates must have a college degree, 2+ years of nonprofit experience, and English proficiency. The primary position we are recruiting for is a “Girls Leadership Program Coordinator” at Asian American Lead, so candidates with experience working with youth development and after school education would be a good match.  Deadline has been extended to April 12, read more and address questions to apply [at] atlascorps.org.

Atlas Corps seeks nonprofit leaders from Brazil

All candidates must have a college degree, 2+ years of nonprofit experiences and English proficiency. The primary organization we are recruiting for is the International Center for Missing and Exploited Children, so a candidate with experience with the issues of child sexual exploitation and international abduction would be a good match. National Peace Corps Association Looking for Several New Interns

Peace Corps ConnectThe independent organization of Returned Peace Corps Volunteers, based in Washington, D.C., is recruiting several interns.

The National Peace Corps Association is seeking the following interns:

An advocacy intern, responsible for supporting and building the network of NPCA advocates, assisting with Capitol Hill advocacy actions, website editing and general advocacy campaigning, including and especially our More Peace Corps campaign.

An assistant to the president (intern) working closely with the president of NPCA to write and edit grant proposals, fundraising letters, and articles for publication, as well as help in the development of organizational projects.

A membership and group relations intern responsible for coordinating and communicating with member groups, identifying and highlighting best practices, marketing and program administration.

And finally a communications/social media intern to work closely with the Director of Communications to help write and edit pieces for the NPCA website, blog, e-newsletter and Worldview magazine, as well as to help manage the NPCA accounts on Web 2.0 sites including Facebook, Youtube, Linkedin, and Flickr.

The internships are unpaid, but the organization’s staff is enthusiastic, wise, and caring. Deadline to apply is April 15th.

New Podcast: AmeriCorps for Legal Experts – Equal Justice Works’s Cole McMahon and Marty Costello

picture-6In 2009, hundreds of emerging legal experts across the United States will offer assistance in helping people who face mortgage foreclosure and other problems through the Equal Justice Works 2009 Summer AmeriCorps program and the one-year AmeriCorps Legal Fellows program.

Every year in this country, four out of five low-income people in need of legal assistance are denied services because of overwhelming case loads at legal services offices and a dire shortage of attorneys who can help them.

Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps plays a crucial role in closing the gap between the supply and demand of legal assistance. AmeriCorps attorneys secure affordable housing, lost wages, orders of protection, health care, public benefits, adoption services, and education for low-income and underserved communities.

Today’s guests on Idealist podcast are Marty Costello, Program Manager, and Cole McMahon, Senior Program Manager, from Equal Justice Works AmeriCorps. They joined me to talk about the Summer Corps, a 300-hour AmeriCorps Education Award program for law school students, as well as its one-year, full-time AmeriCorps Legal Fellows program.
